Alignment

The primary focus of Iyengar yoga is alignment. Holding poses for a longer period of time supported by props create stamina in the muscles.  Its more ideal for those who have physical limitations. The belief is achieve balance in the body, so it can calm the mind.

Healing

Yoga is like a knife. It heals but if used wrongly, it injures. Iyengar yoga is safe. It uses devices called props that are born of seven decades-backed research by Padma Vibhushan Yogacharya BKS Iyengar. Iyengar yoga heals you from within.

Strengthening

Asanas in iyengar yoga class will be carefully chosen and sequenced by the teacher to allow the student to deeply experience and explore the body. This also facilitates the possibility of touching on slightly more challenging and advanced poses towards the end of the class.

Asana

Gratitude and reverence to Lord Patanjali, whose wisdom gave us the path of Yoga, and to our Yogacharya BKS Iyengar Guruji, whose dedication to yoga gave us a way to look within and understand ourselves. “The gift of breath is the gift of life. When we receive a gift, we feel gratitude.”

IYENGAR LINEAGE

Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar the legendary yogacharya leaves behind a legacy, which breathed new life into yoga and made it popular all over the world. Born in a poor Iyengar family in Bellur, through out his childhood he struggled with malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid, fever and malnutrition. A major turning point in his life awaked him in 1934 when he moved to Mysore and began to practice yoga under the tutelage of his brother-In-law Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and the rest as they say is history.

Dr. Geeta S. Iyengar, a woman who took the initiative to change the lives of female species. It is rightly said the one who suffers pain can realize the pain of others and it happened so in the case of Geetaji. She began her journey with yoga at the age of three and made her first public yoga appearance at seven at a demonstration that her father was giving. At the age of 8, she became seriously ill and was not expected to survive. Seeing the medicines weren’t helping, her father decided to try yoga with her. She recovered and continued with her practice of yoga.

Shri Prashant S. Iyengar, is son of legendary Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar (our guru ji). He is presently the Director of Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI). He is also an accomplished violinist. He has deep and profound understanding of Bhartiya darshans and Indian scriptures, which he has delineated through various books authored by him, and videos posted on YouTube channel “IyengarYoga Official”. He has used his creativity to develop his own lexicon with a view to convey the right understanding of concepts of Yog.

Abhijata Iyengar is the senior most teacher in RIMYI who started her practice at the age of 16 under the guidance of Guruji, Prashantji and Geetaji. While her family’s influence is evident in her instruction, she has developed her own teaching style that evinces poise, maturity, and humor. She travelled with Guruji BKS Iyengar to conventions in Russia and China and also accompanied Geeta Ji to international conventions in England, Australia and the USA.According to her “Yoga should make you a JOYOUS human being.”

It has impacted my daily life because my concentration and focus, which I was losing in my mid thirty’s has come back and i am a more peaceful person today. Iyengar Yoga i would say is a complete package for mind, body and soul.

I joined because i was dealing with lot of issues with my organic body. I had fibroids, i had cysts, i had polyps. And almost 6 months back when i went for a checkup. My fibroids size is gone really small, polyps has totally disappeared. So yes it made a lot of impact.

I had a desk job, so I suffered from some fitness related issues. My husband found out that there’s an Iyengar Yoga Centre very close to our house. So we both signed up. Now I find myself much more healthier. I look at my health much more carefully now.

Shruti Bhatt

Student

My name is Kunal Bhatia. Completed two years in July. My body was very stiff and because i have a desk job, sometimes there used to be some niggling pain in the back or the neck. So I’ve been very disciplined for the last two years in terms of attending the classes. Flexibility in the body has improved.

Yoga does not change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees. The goal is far from those who do asana casually, it is near for those who do it intensely intense. ” Do not stop trying just because perfection eludes you” ” Yoga is a mirror to look at ourselves from within” “Yoga is a light, which once lit, will never dim. The better your practice, the brighter the flame.”
